Not So Disappointed?
Week from Monday 11th May 2026 - Meanwhile In Blooskyland, a couple of SOFT MACHINE recordings have exchanged hands... I posted a picture of the CD cover that I did for the recent SWISS WEBCAST, so naturally I had a few replies from the curious. It appears that the original broadcast is no longer there, so opportunities for 'acquisition' have now been lost (It hasn't yet appeared on the SUGARMEGS archives either, surprisingly - although there is ANOTHER recent show in Portugal that will no doubt need hearing at some point!).
Luckily, I captured the "CONCERTO-JAZZ" broadcast on the night and I do have THE FILES! I sent a link to my Scottish chum "CBQ" and he in turn has sent me his own 'naughty' recording of the Softy gig in KINROSS, which I look forward to getting into.
But I have a couple of other "PROJECTS" to do before I give it my FULL attention. I recently got sent some rather good soundboards from BRAND X's 1978 "Masques" tour, and some more 'unofficial' radio broadcasts have appeared on the ZAPPA YouTube channel which merit 'capturing'. I also leant an ear to PAT MASTELOTTO's 1999 projeKCt "MasticA", but I didn't enjoy it enough to consider it a 'KEEPER'.
Week from Monday 18th May 2026 - In the early hours, a special treat to start the week... Those wacky STICK MEN have made freely available a professionally* recorded live show from their most recent string of American dates, as a big 'thank you' for all us MAILING LIST diehards! (*"Professional" as opposed to all those countless "official bootlegs" that we've accumulated over the years).
I dashed up to the GENERAL OBSTACLE for my routine blood test, but the 'walk-in' centre was fully subscribed. I had to chance my arm at the unit up on LEVEL C. I got seen to, but - NOTE TO SELF - it might not be a bad idea to make an appointment next time! It's a long way to go on the off-chance...
My Wednesday bus journey to the hozzy was delayed by a traffic diversion in Paulsgrove. That wasn't a problem then, as I wasn't ON THE CLOCK. But for my 'SATURDAY CLUB' appointment, I took the precaution of taking an earlier bus 'just in case'. Looks like I OVERCOMPENSATED! I got there nearly an hour early! However, there was no 'PATIENT WAITING' involved and I got my treatments more or less straight away, which was good and efficient of them.
Back to the ZAPPA PROJECTS...
Week from Monday 25th May 2026 - PHEW! WOT A SCORCHER!? The meejer is currently full of "It's hotter here than Athens/Cairo/Lagos!" stories. I've been trying to stay in the shade for as long as possible during the days, but it's been the NIGHTS which have proved the most uncomfortable. It's been too warm to get any good sleep - even less than I USUALLY manage and that's NEVER been enough! I just marinade in my own juices for a few hours and then get up in the early hours for a quick burst of productive activity before it's SIESTA time again!
But I HAVE to venture out on THURSDAY, as I have my biennial appointment at SPECSAVERS in Gosport. I will endeavour to kill as many stone birds as I possibly can in one outing, as I also need visit the PRINT SHOP (to avail myself of a fresh batch of CD COVERS) and do a few 'bits' of shopping. The weatherbots 'promise' that it will be a little cooler by then...(?)
My OPTICIANS check-up revealed that my eyesight is exactly the same as it was two years ago, in fact probably the same as it was two years before that! I'm always worried that this time of year is not ideal for getting tested, what with the itching and the streaming and the general hayfeverishness. But the chap said that it doesn't affect all their highly-advanced modern apparatus one bit. So I didn't really have to splash out in the end, but I treated myself to a new pair of 'READERS' anyway. The ones that I'm currently wearing, and which live permanently on this here desk, are a bit of a loose fit. One sneeze and they fall off! I'll be returning to Gosport in a couple of Wednesdays' time for my 'FITTING'...
I've been following the daily highlights of the GIRO D'ITALIA, but it was always a foregone conclusion that JONAS VINGEGAARD would dominate the proceedings.
It's been a bit of a disappointment for the LiDL-TREK lads this time around. JONNY MILAN has been consistently bested in all the sprints. GIULIO CICCONE has been clocking up a few KING OF THE MOUNTAIN points, but he only gets to wear the MAGLIA AZURE as second best to Vingegaard. DEREK GEE has only just about made it onto the top ten GC this time, having come fourth last year.
(Strike that "disappointment" comment! On Friday's 'queen' stage, CICCO hoovered up all the points going, thus he is now KING OF THE MOUNTAINS for real. JONNY still has a chance of a sprint finish stage win on the final day. And DEREK GEE has now snuck up the GC rankings to number five!)
I'm a fool to myself, but I thought I'd give the RECORD FAIR in Southampton another go! And after a long hot bus ride, I fully expected disappointment as before. But unlike my previous visits, I WASN'T greeted by a hall solely full of twelve-inch shellacs. The CD traders were ALSO there this time! I gleaned myself a twofer of DEKE LEONARD's first two solo albums ("ICEBERG" and "KAMIKAZE"), a 2CD ZAPPA radio show from Detroit 1976 and a fresh copy of VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR's "The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other". And some very sore feet!
