The Good Bits
Week from Monday 5th May 2025 - I dug out a bunch of CDs which, although they "HAVE THEIR MOMENTS", don't get played much at all these days, and rarely all the way through:- Turn-of-the-seventies stuff like ANDWELLA'S DREAM, COLOSSEUM and LOCOMOTIVE... So before I add them to the "LET OXFAM HAVE IT!" pile, I'm compiling an all-encompassing mix CD of 'THE GOOD BITS', with the working title "SONGS FROM THE GREAT PURGE".
Only one necessary outing this week... The GP PRACTICE invited me (via a TEXT, as is their wont) to take an "ANNUAL" BLOOD TEST, even though I've explained that I already do a couple of tests every month as it is! Anyway, I conceded to give them another armful. I think it's mainly to ascertain ones CHOLESTEROL levels, but that should also save me another visit to the hospital before my next PAMIDRONATE fix.
On Friday, just for the heck of it, I went for a bus ride to Portsmouth. I spent an hour or two hobbling around the charity shops of NORTH END... Mostly just 'WINDOW SHOPPING' and I came away empty-handed (because I can). But it was nice to get out-and-about in the sunshine for a while.
This Saturday was a 'DAY-OFF'. With no hospital visit scheduled, I spent it at the "SATURDAY MORNING PICTURES" instead! Talking Pictures TV presented its usual weekend bill of nostalgic fare, including those great old GERRY ANDERSON spacepuppet shows, the definitive TV version of "BATMAN", another crappy SCI-FI B-MOVIE and, later in the day, un film de JACQUES TATI, which I eventually got bored with... But it's GIRO D'ITALIA time!
Week from Monday 12th May 2025 - The first three days of the GIRO D'ITALIA (for 'Italy' read 'Albania') have been pretty thrilling for us LiDL-TREK fans!
On the first stage, MADS PEDERSEN was launched into position to win his first sprint finish, beating several of the so-called 'favourites' and getting a pink jersey for his (and the team's) efforts. He lost the leader's jersey, by a mere fraction of a second, the next day in the TIME TRIAL (although he still OWNS the 'ciclamina' in the points competition). But then he got it back AGAIN on day three, in another sprint finish.
It has been most impressive seeing the lads working together as a team. GIULIO CICCONE is supposed to be 'our man' for GC, but he's been working for Mads instead, for as long as that continues to produce great results for THE SQUAD. They've consistently been at the front of things. Every peleton has been under the control of the guys in the multicoloured LiDL regalia (Ciccone! Hoole! Vacek! Verona!), each taking turns. By the way, MATHIAS VACEK is now leading the young riders' WHITE JERSEY contest and has also a virtual podium place in GC.
And to make the experience even more pleasurable, I've been sticking to my avowed intent to watch the 'HIGHLIGHTS' show on Quest WITH THE SOUND TURNED OFF, so that I don't have listen to that bloody awful TNT Sports commentary team. Happy days!
{{{ I hope I haven't jinxed it by being over-enthusiastic! On the fourth stage there were a number of dodgy crashes, which left several of the Trekkies stranded at the tail end of the peleton. SØREN KRAGH ANDERSEN suffered the worst and he had to drop out with a broken wrist. Luckily, Mads made it back to the front and still finished fourth. It hasn't affected the General Classification at all. Mere seconds separate the riders on the TOP TEN board, such that the guy that all the "EXPERTS" have tipped to win the race overall, PRIMOŽ ROGLIČ, isn't even on it yet! I hope he doesn't win it, 'cos it's bloody tedious having to locate the right code for those weird slavic 'CARONED GRAPHEME' characters, every time I have to type his name! }}}
Mads won Stage Five by less than a wheel's width. He keeps his MAGLIA ROSA and increases his lead in the MAGLIA CICLOMINA. There was then an almighty crash in Stage Six, neutralising the race and thus freezing the time gaps and bonuses, so he didn't bother to involve himself in the sprint in the end. But that's probably the last chance for the SPRINTERS to do their thing for the next couple of weeks. Next stop, SOME BIG MOUNTAINS and an uphill finish or two...
