The Following
Week from Monday 16th October 2023 - As with certain governments one could mention, nearly every single 'idea' that ENLO SKUM has loudly announced on Xitter over the past few months has failed to come to actuality, at least not from where I'm sitting... And so, like those governments, there's no point in listening anymore. (This week, he's given a convoluted and hard to swallow reason why charging users a dollar a month might be beneficial to stamping out the bots. They're going to trial the idea in New Zealand and the Philippines. Apparently.)
One new 'feature' I HAVE noticed is that my list of "FOLLOWERS" is becoming populated by alphanumerically-named 'BOTS that come and go according to how you interact with them. Which luckily I don't. I don't see any of them on my own ("For You") TIMELINE, they appear to be just sitting there waiting to pounce. I guess it's a ploy to ambush all those "FOLLOW BACK FRIDAY" enthusiasts, people who are obsessed with QUANTITY over QUALITY. No wonder there's been a fresh wave of "I'M LEAVING THIS HELLSITE". As I've pointed out many times before, TWITTER is only as bad/good as you allow it to be... (I also seemed to have escaped all the 'naughty ladies' who pretend to 'LIKE' people's postings. Perhaps, it occurred to me, you only see that sort of thing on the "FOLLOWING" version of the timeline? A cunning trick). But if the choice is between keeping on top of things myself, or paying Elmo a dollar to take care of it for me, I know where I stand...
In another move, Leno's answer to the issue that some of his new "suggestions" might contravene European law, is to threaten to close down Xitter in Europe! Another favourite from the right-wing playbook - "You say we're breaking the law? Then change it or we will!". Then again, as he has demonstrated time and time again, he sees Twixxer as being targetted mainly at Americans, and finds it hard to conceive of a world outside of the US bubble.
Slightly more disturbing is the news that another bigbiz capitalist has bought up BANDCAMP and immediately laid off half of the staff. No doubt preparing to relaunch it in an entirely new format, destroy any appeal it ever had originally for artists and punters, stifling creativity in the grand tradition of MySPACE (They've already started ditching the articles and blogs. Sound familiar?).
In other news, I uploaded an oldish piece of music to my YouTube and posted a link to it on my Xitter timeline. As you do. But I get the feeling that nobody even sees these things anymore. Not a single reaction, not even from the 'NAUGHTY NUMERICALLY-NAMED LADYBOTS'.
Lots of pre-season upheaval going on in the world of PRO-CYCLING: Primoz Roglic has expressed dissatisfaction with staying with JUMBO-VISMA, the team with too many leaders. Someone has suggested that he could be heading for MOVISTAR... But now the team's sponsorship deal with Jumbo is ending anyway. At one point, a merger with one of the other teams was on the cards, but they've found a new sponsor. Next season, they'll be known as VISMA LEASE-A-BIKE. Fair slips off the tongue, dunnit? I can't wait to hear how Eurosport's dynamic Irish commentator manages to get his chops around that one! Yes... well...
