Yellow Weather

Week from Monday 17th July 2023 - On Saturday, I had planned a change from my usual routine. I was going to hop on a bus to Southampton, to spend a couple of hours at Art Asia's MELA FESTIVAL in Hogland's Park. But a couple of 'YELLOW' WEATHER WARNINGS have put an end to THAT idea! On Friday, Art Asia had tweeted that they would have to CANCEL the day, due to the Health & Safety concerns that would come with the HIGH WINDS. Disappointing, if only for all the traders who have lost out again. A number of other events across the south have taken similar decisions (or maybe the Local Authorities have taken the decision for them!), including a couple of other small music 'festivals', an air show, some birdwatching days-out and a foodie festival on Southsea Common. So it's back to being a NORMAL Sat'day for me, mostly spent "WATCHING THE DETECTIVES" after all!

(As it happens, it was a LITTLE bit breezy, but it was a nice sunny day for the most part.)

This week, I opted to catch the BUS to Winchester... I didn't HAVE to, because there wasn't an all-out STRIKE this Wednesday, only a 'WORK TO RULE'. There are trains running alright, but one glance at the online DEPARTURE BOARDS revealed an awful lot of RED'n'PINK disruptions and cancellations, so I went for the slow-but-dependable route... (It's also the CHEAPER option anyway, what with that 'ANY SINGLE FARE FOR TWO QUID' offer still standing, at least for the Summer months.)

I availed myself of "iNDEXO8", the latest compilation from Ian Boddy's DiN concern, as usual as a BANDCAMP DOWNLOAD. I won't claim to have enjoyed every track on the album - ain't that ALWAYS the case with various artists 'samplers'? - but the whole thing flows together nicely in one of Mr Boddy's seamless mixes and is a pleasant enough listen in its own right. It's all 'ELECTRONIC' music of course, so there are inevitably going to be tracks where the choice of synth-tone sounds a bit naff to these ears, or is slightly corny(?) or amateurish(!) in a manner that makes me think "That sounds EXACTLY like something I did in the eighties when I first started dabbling". YOU KNOW THE KIND OF THING! But it's made me want to investigate a couple of the albums in full, so isn't that the very purpose of label 'samplers'?

The final week of the TOUR DE FRANCE has been UP AND DOWN in every sense! What started as a two-horse race between VINGO and THE POG, saw one of the horses drop out of contention altogether. Well, The Pog's still SECOND, but there's now a seven minute deficit, so I don't see him recovering from that! But you never can tell with The Pog... In the more-important-to-me TREKKY news, MADS PEDERSEN is second in the wrong-colour-GREEN JERSEY competition, but is running out of chances to get any higher (Mads has usually been in the thick of any INTERMEDIATE SPRINTS going, but Jasper Philipsen has benefitted from pretty much ALL the sprint finishes available). GIULIO CICCONE has a narrow-ish lead in the KING OF THE MOUNTAINS jersey, so that looks very promising... SKJELMOSE is running fifth in the WHITE JERSEY contest, albeit at over an hour-and-three-quarters behind the predicted Pog. Anyway, there WILL some chances to show off the new LiDL colours on at least a couple of the podia in Paris. Which Is Nice.
